What Happens When Tooth Loss is Left Untreated

The human body is a beautiful, interconnected system, so when you change one thing it can have ramifications on the rest of the body. What happens when that one change is the loss of a tooth?

Effects On The Rest Of The Mouth

When you lose a tooth, or multiple teeth, your mouth begins to change. If the tooth loss is left untreated, the changes it causes can be detrimental to oral and overall health.

The first change that starts taking place is the loss of bone and gum tissue in the area of the lost tooth. This loss can then cause nearby teeth to lose their support and drift towards the empty space where the missing tooth once was.

Additionally, the tooth above or below the empty space can begin to extend out towards the empty space. This, in turn, weakens the support of the teeth on the opposite side of the lost tooth.

Call Dr. Philip Messer or book an appointment online to learn what other damage can be caused when a tooth is lost and how it can be prevented or fixed.

Hear From A Patient!

Bob and Jill, who have lived in Randolph for over 30 years, talk about how grateful they are for having Dr. Messer as their dentist.

“He clearly defines the options you have, but most important of all, he lets you know what’s going to happen if you don’t do anything about it. So, this five dollar problem in a couple of years may be a five thousand dollar problem if you ignore it.”
